'Billy' is a musical play based on Keith Waterhouse's novel Billy Liar. It is set in the very early part of 1960, in the fictional Yorkshire town of Stradhoughton. Billy is a young guy, still living at home with his parents, and holding down a dull job at the town undertakers. He finds life in Stradhoughton dull, dull, dull; the people are dull, the places are grim and there's nothing to do. Despite this, Billy manages to keep three girlfriends on the go. This story was made into a successful film in 1963 (starring Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie, Leonard Rossiter and Rodney Bewes) and the 1974 musical helped to launch the careers of Michael Crawford amd Elaine Paige. Addditional material was introduced by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (best known for The Likely Lads scripts). Furthermore, the music was written by John Barry, famous for his James Bond film scores. Billy escapes his mundane life by daydreaming - to visit his own mythical land of Ambrosia - and by lying to all and sundry, bringing about a catastrophic and deeply moving conclusion to this bitter sweet comedy. By arrangement with Josef Weinberger
